Today, the Equal Justice Works Housing Justice Program was honored with a Fast Company 2024 World Changing Ideas Award as a finalist in the Best World-Changing Idea Social Justice category. Being recognized by Fast Company in the World Changing Ideas Awards is a tremendous honor and a testament to the Program's unique approach: combining the traditional legal service model with community organizing, impact litigation, and policy. This acknowledgment reaffirms our commitment to innovation, drives us to further advance renters' rights, and motivates us to continue to hold bad-actor landlords accountable in courts across the country. Congratulations to our Fellows and host organizations in South Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland, and thank you to our generous supporters -- we share this honor with you! https://lnkd.in/eTKzNMcJ

In 1921, the federal government enacted the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act (HHCA) -- which provides for long-term residential, agricultural, and pastoral homestead leases to eligible native Hawaiians -- to address the alarming decline in the native Hawaiian population. Homestead families often encounter issues such as a lack of internet access, environmental impacts and access to water, and lease cancelation. Through his project, 2020 Fellow Henderson Huihui was able to empower Native Hawaiian beneficiaries to retain and proactively manage their family homesteads by providing educational materials, direct legal services, and advocacy. What explains the dearth of public interest attorneys? To answer that question, Equal Justice Works partnered with the Law School Survey of Student Engagement (LSSSE) to identify blind spots in supporting future public interest lawyers and quantify just how accessible information about pursuing public interest law is for law students. We found that only 44% of participating schools provide funding for public interest internships, and an even smaller percentage of schools, 38%, employ public interest career advisors. These results illustrate that our legal community has a crucial opportunity to build or strengthen support for new public interest lawyers -- from law school engagement and advocacy and beyond. As Equal Justice Works CEO Verna Williams writes, "When millions of people in the United States cannot access legal assistance to avoid eviction, maintain custody of their children, or escape an abusive partner, we need an all-hands-on deck solution. Every part of the legal profession must focus on this crisis." https://lnkd.in/eh2s7tZa
